Modern laptops often feel sluggish even before they are a few years old, and users frequently assume they need to buy more RAM. The most obvious sign that a computer’s memory is full is a noticeable slowdown in performance, which can eventually lead to crashes. While 8GB used to be considered the standard for comfortable computing, current applications have grown larger and more demanding, making 16GB the new minimum requirement for smooth multitasking. However, upgrading to new DDR5 modules has become difficult recently due to supply shortages caused by AI data center demand, driving up prices for consumers. Learning to manage existing memory can often resolve these performance issues without requiring a hardware purchase.

RAM serves as temporary storage for instructions and data that the processor accesses quickly. When this memory fills up, the system relies on the slower storage drive, which causes the computer to feel sluggish. Restarting the computer clears this volatile memory, effectively resetting the system to a fresh state. This method is quick and effective for recovering resources, particularly if a specific process is not releasing memory properly. In Windows, users can address memory leaks by simply restarting the specific process in Task Manager rather than rebooting the entire machine.

It is easy to overlook how much memory browser tabs consume, as each tab runs as a separate process with its own allocation. While some tabs use less than 100MB, others can take up over 1GB, quickly depleting available resources. Checking the memory usage of open tabs allows users to identify and close the heaviest offenders. Similarly, unused applications can hold onto memory indefinitely, so closing these programs restores capacity. Startup apps that launch automatically upon logging in can also drain resources before the user even begins their workday.

Optimizing Background Processes

Managing startup programs is a straightforward way to ensure the computer has enough memory available from the moment it turns on. On Windows, this involves disabling unnecessary items in the Startup tab of Task Manager, while Mac users can remove unwanted applications from the Login Items list in System Settings. These adjustments help maintain system responsiveness without the need for expensive hardware upgrades.

It is often surprising how much performance improves just by closing a handful of unnecessary browser tabs and background applications. While these steps might seem like minor adjustments, they address the root cause of the slowdown rather than masking it. The difference in speed can be significant once the heavy processes are removed from the active memory pool.
