The world’s top AI researchers have raised alarms about the dangers of advanced artificial intelligence, sparking a heated debate over whether these concerns are justified or exaggerated. High-profile industry leaders are now pushing for immediate action to control AI development before it reaches a point of no return.

AI’s extinction risk: Fear or fact?

For the first time, Dario Amodei, CEO of Anthropic, Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, and Elon Musk have publicly aligned on the need for stricter oversight of AI. Amodei advocated for independent monitoring and industry-wide regulations, while Altman proposed a slower development pace rather than complete halts. Musk, known for his vocal stance on AI risks, supported Amodei’s position on social media platforms.

These warnings came as AI-related stock values declined in response, while Chinese state media dismissed the concerns as Cold War-era tactics. In the U.S., political divisions over AI regulation have sharpened. Donald Trump minimized the risks, framing competition with China as the primary concern, while House Speaker Mike Johnson stated that Congress would not take the lead on regulation. Meanwhile, Democrats are advocating for new rules before the midterm elections.

China, however, is accelerating its AI efforts. President Xi Jinping proposed expanding open-source AI collaboration among BRICS nations, even as China’s intelligence agencies issued warnings about AI threats to national security. The growing divide between U.S. resistance and global pressure on AI regulation is becoming more pronounced.

A 2023 survey of AI researchers revealed that 36% believed advanced AI could pose an existential risk to humanity within the next century. When asked about risks within 50 years, that figure increased to 43%.

Age-reversal therapy restores sight in blind mice—and now human trials

Amid the AI debate, a separate scientific breakthrough is unfolding in the field of rejuvenation. Yuancheng (Ryan) Lu, a geneticist at Harvard’s Whitehead Institute, has developed an age-reversal technique that repaired optic nerves in blind mice, fully restoring their vision. Initially tested as a student project, the method is now advancing to human clinical trials.

Lu’s focus on aging stems from a personal connection. Age-related blindness has affected his family, and his own genetic testing identified a mutation linked to macular degeneration, a leading cause of vision loss in older adults. His research targets the fundamental issue: cellular aging. By temporarily activating four “Yamanaka factors”—genes that reset cell identity, his team reversed damage in retinal cells, effectively reversing cellular aging.

Lu’s method is not the only age-reversal approach under development. Other research groups are exploring senolytics, drugs that eliminate aging cells, and epigenetic reprogramming. However, his technique stands out due to its precision: it targets only the cells requiring rejuvenation, reducing the cancer risks associated with full cellular reset.

The upcoming human trials, scheduled to begin this year, will focus first on safety assessments. If successful, the therapy could mark a turning point in treating age-related diseases by offering not just management, but reversal.

Divisions over AI risks deepen

The split between tech leaders and policymakers reflects broader tensions. In contrast, governments and corporations prioritize economic and strategic benefits, viewing regulation as an obstacle to innovation.

In biotechnology, Lu’s work provides a different perspective: progress without alarm. His therapy does not threaten humanity; it offers healing. This contrast shows a larger challenge: advancing technology while maintaining control over its consequences. For now, solutions remain uncertain.

The next phase hinges on whether warnings from AI researchers will be taken seriously or dismissed as overstated. The potential consequences could not be more significant.
