Roku devices face scrutiny after price increase

Roku increased the prices of its streaming devices by up to $50. The flagship Roku Ultra now costs $150, up from $100, while the Roku Streaming Stick 4K rose from $50 to $80. The entry-level Roku Streaming Stick also went up by $10 to $40.

Global demand for memory has climbed, partly because of AI technologies that depend on high-capacity chips. This trend has affected consumer electronics, including set-top boxes and streaming sticks.

Roku’s devices often sell at discounts, but the new prices reflect a shift in tech hardware costs. No software or feature updates were announced to justify the increase.

Despite the higher prices, Roku’s nearly 20 years in the streaming market give it an advantage in familiarity and app support. Its operating system, Roku OS, provides access to thousands of channels, many free, and shows fewer ads than some competitors. Both the Streaming Stick 4K and Ultra support major HDR formats, including Dolby Vision and HDR10+.

The Ultra also includes Ethernet and USB ports, the latter allowing external storage. However, these features come at a premium, and alternatives like Walmart’s Onn 4K Pro offer lower prices. The Onn 4K Pro, priced at $60, includes Ethernet, Dolby Atmos support, and compatibility with Google Assistant and Google Cast.

For users outside Roku’s ecosystem, the price difference is harder to ignore. The Onn 4K Pro even supports USB flash drives with an adapter, a feature that once distinguished the Ultra. Roku’s strength lies in its software and app selection, though the gap isn’t large enough to justify the cost for many buyers.

The streaming device market has matured, and differences between platforms are smaller than they were years ago. Most users won’t notice a major performance gap between a $60 device and a $150 one. The choice often comes down to which ecosystem they already use or are willing to adopt.

These price increases may not deter loyal customers, but they make it easier for competitors to attract budget-conscious shoppers. Roku’s dominance in streaming hardware isn’t at risk yet, but the higher prices could slow its growth as alternatives improve.

The Ultra still appeals to users who want wired connectivity and a premium remote. For others, the value isn’t as clear. The Streaming Stick 4K, now $80, faces tough competition from cheaper 4K options by Amazon, Google, and Walmart.

Memory costs aren’t expected to fall soon, so these prices will likely remain. Roku’s devices frequently go on sale, but the new baseline is higher than before.
